A vintage Porsche bar that’s ready to roll. Originally labelled 617 yet closely resembling the 917, this is likely a tactic used to avoid Porsche’s legal department when these were in production. A space age body shape, that when the lid is lifted, reveals a set of 4 shot glasses and a square decanter, with a classic wind up music box playing when the bottle is lifted out.
Modelled off the car that gave Porsche its very first overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971.
‘Bar Cars’ were a massive international craze in the 60s and 70s. However, almost all other novelty decanter cars manufactured at the time were designed as antique, early-20th-century vehicles [ like the 1918 Ford Model T or the 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom ]. This was one of the incredibly rare exceptions that featured a sleek, space-age, contemporary racing car silhouette instead of a nostalgic brass-era design.
A generous scale of 40cm, it’s the perfect balance of sculptural yet functional object that will look awesome on any shelf.
